Twin Chimney House

A new, contemporary single-family house, floating between the trees amongst the peaks and valleys of the Catskill Mountains. The structure hovers on stilts to touch the ground lightly, navigate the rolling terrain, and cast long views over the lake. A cranked roof and twin chimneys establish the character of the structure, anchoring it to the landscape and offering a sense of permanence and calm. The house is organized for living slowly and for bringing the outside in. Large expanses of glass draw daylight and lake views deep into the interior, and a colossal kitchen island allows for shared cooking during busy holidays. Materials are chosen for durability and longevity. Larch cladding was selected for its sustainable, fast growth and rich brown hues. Soapstone surfaces dress the bathrooms, their non-porous properties offering both practical and quietly luxurious finishes, reminiscent of a spa.

A house for all seasons, the screened porch allows for late summer nights free of mosquitoes, while a giant masonry fireplace warms the bones in the great room when snow falls outside. A highly insulated building envelope and an efficient ERV ventilation system support comfort, energy efficiency, and year-round use. A place set apart from the city, shaped by care, and designed to endure as a family lake house for generations.
