Lounsbury House
A ground-up new residential project set within two acres of gently sloping landscape in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The house is conceived as a pair of simple forms: a stone main house and a timber barn, positioned carefully within the site to feel settled rather than placed. Together, the buildings follow the contours of the land, preserving existing trees and the quiet character of the setting. The architecture is shaped by proportion, mass, and material. Stone walls anchor the house to the ground, lending weight and permanence, while the adjacent wood barn introduces a light, airy sister, clad in local timber charred black for zero maintenance. The relationship between the two structures establishes a small compound, scaled to the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
Inside, spaces are organized clearly and without excess. Rooms are arranged in a calm and legible sequence, supporting daily life while allowing the house to remain inwardly focused and settled. Materials are selected for durability and long-term health. Stone, timber, and natural finishes are used throughout and the building envelope is fully breathable, insulated with cork to supporting a healthy indoor environment for a client commitment to clean, natural indoor air quality free of petrochemical products. As always, environmental performance is a priority. A geothermal heat pump system provides efficient heating and cooling, powered by the earth itself, while photovoltaic solar panels along the south-facing roof of the barn harness the suns energy for a net zero energy building. Together, these systems support year-round comfort with minimal environmental impact.
