Carroll Gardens Townhouse

Townhouse Renovation, Brooklyn, New York

A full gut renovation of a three-story townhouse in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, undertaken to adapt a historic urban house for contemporary family living. The project focuses on clarity, proportion, and continuity rather than reinvention. The existing structure is carefully reworked to improve flow, light, and functionality, while retaining the essential character and scale of the original townhouse. Internally, the house is reorganized to support daily life across multiple levels. Spaces are arranged in a clear vertical sequence, balancing openness with moments of enclosure and privacy. Circulation is simplified, allowing the house to feel calm, legible, and easy to inhabit. Material choices emphasize durability and restraint. The home utilizes natural finishes throughout, from locally grown American white oak, Adirondack limestone and natural wool to breathable limewash paint. New work is intentionally understated, allowing the architecture of the townhouse to remain present without nostalgia or pastiche. Environmental upgrades follow a fabric-first approach, improving comfort and performance while respecting the constraints of a dense urban setting. Modern mini-split systems are integrated discreetly, supporting long-term use and adaptability. The result is a measured transformation of a Brooklyn townhouse, designed to feel settled, durable, and attuned to life in Carroll Gardens.
